Books that start conversationsWhat's the big idea book cover

In 2024, our 30th anniversary year, with big challenges to our democracy, economy and environment, we launched Australia Institute Press.

Our first title, What’s the Big Idea: 32 Bold Ideas for a Better Australia, was published in November 2024, to celebrate The Australia Institute’s 30th anniversary. We invited some of Australia and the world’s leading thinkers to each outline how we can make change for the better, on topics ranging from the housing crisis to climate change, from mental health to the Australia—US alliance.

Our second book, A Time For Bravery: What happens when Australia chooses courage came out in December 2025 and features politicians, academics, medical doctors and a firefighter, examining what courage looks like in Australia’s democracy, economy and society.

Vantage Point essays

Vantage Point is our regular series, designed to encourage deeper thinking and informed discussion about the challenges facing Australia and the world.

The series launched with Dr Emma Shortis’ analysis of the American election and has since featured Richard Denniss on how political pragmatism is killing us, Professor George Williams on universities and Australia’s future, Kumi Naidoo on the case for a fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty and Jane Caro on the battle for public education.
