A Win for Media Diversity and AAP

The Budget provides for revived not-for-profit newswire, Australian Associated Press (AAP), to receive $15 million (split over two years) to ensure its financial stability. AAP was set to close last year, an event described as a great loss and a blow to democracy and that would have seen News Ltd become even more dominant in Australia’s already concentrated media landscape.

Philanthropist investors saved the newswire at the final moment and revived it as a not-for-profit, which perhaps better reflects the contribution that news reporting and investigative journalism make to our society than a commercial, profit-driven model.
