The Australia Institute has welcomed the decision from the South Australian Labor and Greens parties to oppose the Marshall Government’s proposed Electric Vehicle Tax.

“The Australia Institute welcomes the decision of the South Australian Labor Party and the South Australian Greens to oppose the electric vehicle tax,” said Noah Schultz-Byard, SA Director at The Australia Institute.

“This tax is a terrible idea for South Australia and, with Labor, Greens and cross bench MPs all voicing concerns about the idea, it appears to be dead on arrival.

“The sooner this tax is officially dropped, the less damage will be done to South Australia’s reputation as a leader in clean technology.

“This misguided EV tax has received a strong negative reaction in South Australia. It was sprung on the state without consultation and at a time when, confusingly, the Marshall Government says it is trying to increase interest in electric vehicles.

“Our research shows there is strong support for policies that would see the uptake of electric vehicles increase across Australia, but this new tax would have the opposite effect.”
