The world has been witness to the devastating toll of Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Join three healthcare professionals for a discussion on the medical and ethical dilemmas faced by those providing medical care to Palestinians in Gaza, the profound impact of warfare on children’s health and the risks faced by healthcare professionals in a warzone.

SPEAKERS:

Professor Fiona Stanley AC — Patron, Telethon Kids Institute & 2003 Australian of the Year​​

Named Australian of the Year in 2003, Professor Fiona Stanley is a vocal advocate for the needs of children and their families. Professor Stanley is the patron and founding Director of the Telethon Kids Institute, established in Perth in 1990. In 2004, Professor Stanley was honoured as a “National Living Treasure” by the National Trust. She is the UNICEF Australia Ambassador for Early Childhood Development.

Dr Mohammed Mustafa — ER Doctor & Humanitarian

Dr Mo is an English-Australian emergency physician trainee of Palestinian heritage whose courageous humanitarian work has brought critical attention to the healthcare crisis in conflict zones. Coming from a Palestinian refugee family, Dr Mustafa pursued medical training across Britain and Australia, embodying a lifelong commitment to human rights and care for the world’s most marginalised. Dr Mo is on a mission to bring a children’s hospital into Gaza. In 2024 and 2025, Dr Mo served in Gaza’s Nasser and European hospitals, with RAHMA World wide providing critical emergency care amid escalating violence.

Dr Sue Wareham OAM — President, Medical Association for Prevention of War

Dr Sue Wareham has spoken and written widely on peace and disarmament issues, including the impacts of armed conflict on civilians and on the environment.  She is President of the Medical Association for Prevention of War (Australia) and Secretary of Australians for War Powers Reform.  She is also a past board member of
ICAN (the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) Australia. Dr Wareham is a former Canberra GP.

Ebony Bennett — Deputy Director, The Australia Institute

Ebony Bennett is the Deputy Director of The Australia Institute and host of its popular webinar series and Follow the Money podcast. Beginning her career as a journalist in the Canberra press gallery for the Sydney Morning Herald and Australian Financial Review, Ebony has worked in federal politics in a variety of roles for almost 20 years and has published research on climate change and energy, gender and street harassment and contributed a chapter to Morrison’s Miracle: The 2019 Australian Federal Election (ANU Press 2020) and The Nordic Edge: Policy Possibilities for Australia (MUP 2021). Ebony is a regular commentator and contributor across broadcast and print media, she appears regularly as a commentator on ABC and Sky News and has a fortnightly column in The Canberra Times.
