Australia Institute research has shown the gaps in the ABC Board appointment process that allow for politicised “captain’s picks” and revealed the role of cronyism in appointments to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. During the last term of Parliament, the AAT was replaced with a tribunal with an independent, merit-based process, proving that reform is possible.

Political appointments for key roles have raised serious questions about integrity and public trust. Dr Scamps’ bill proposes a new independent process for appointing senior officials, advertising roles wider, independent selection panels and greater parliamentary oversight.
