Politics in the Pub: Stage 3 and Fairer Tax Reform

What you need to know
Verity Lane Market

The Albanese Government’s decision to redesign the Morrison-era Stage 3 tax cuts is a win for equality and the economy, with $84 billion dollars delivered to low- and middle-income earners over the next ten years. The policy shift is the culminaton of five years of Australia Institute research and advocacy for fairer tax reforms.

Join Richard Denniss and Matt Grudnoff as they unpack the Stage 3 changes and where the tax reform debate goes to from here.

Preserving Australia’s progressive income tax system is the cornerstone of the Stage 3 debate, but Australia currently collects more money from students paying HECS than it does from the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax. It is critical that Australia pursues fair and efficient tax reforms including increasing the the PRRT, pollution taxes,  and wealth taxes to raise the revenue needed to fund public services now and into the future.
