Lurk before you leap

It’s always a bit sad watching someone torn between what they said they wanted and what they really wanted. Choosing can be hard at the best of times, but having an audience can make it excruciating, so spare a thought for the good folk of the Business Tax Working Group. Corporate Australia has told us for years that it needs lower company tax rates, but last week it had to admit to the government that, in fact, it didn’t really want them. Indeed, having told us for years that it also wanted to simplify the tax system, it also had to tell the Treasurer that it didn’t want that either. Ouch. That had to hurt.
