Polling shows Australians don’t trust Trump on refugee swap
New polling from The Australia Institute shows the majority of Australians think US President Donald Trump will not honour a deal to take refugees from Manus Island and Nauru to be resettled in the United States.
Half of respondents (51%) disagreed with the statement ‘Donald Trump will follow through on the agreement’ while 28% agreed and 21% didn’t know.
The poll showed a quarter (24%) of respondents support the current bipartisan policy of keeping asylum seekers in camps even when they are found to be genuine refugees. Almost three quarters (72%) of respondents supported options which would see refugees brought to Australia either immediately or after processing off-shore (don’t know 4%).
