Submission on Defence Legislation Amendment (Enhancement of Defence Force Response to Emergencies) Bill 2020
The Australia Institute made a submission to the Senate Standing Committees on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade regarding the Defence Legislation Amendment (Enhancement of Defence Force Response to Emergencies) Bill 2020.
The submission argues that the bill should not pass as it presents several risks to the ADF, its personnel and its standing in the Australian community. The bill represents another example of the ‘securitisation’ of Australian public policy, avoiding complex policy problems and reflexively extending the roles and responsibilities of military, law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
