Gas: How to counter the biggest players in town
Australia has an abundance of gas. Almost 80% of Australia’s gas is exported as liquefied natural gas (LNG), the gas industry pays zero royalties on more than half the gas exported. The monetary value of this gas is enormous. The total value of LNG exports over the last four years is estimated at $265 billion. Exports of LNG based on royalty-free gas were valued at a total of $149 billion. The gas industry is pushing government to approve new gas fields to be opened for export, less taxes and royalties and fewer environmental regulations.
In this webinar, The Australia Institute’s Research Director Rod Campbell explains the enormous expansion of Australia’s gas industry, Australia’s policies on gas extraction, the role of gas in the economy and household energy prices, how it contributes to climate change and why it’s in dire need of policy reform.
