While the gas industry has been busy trying to tell you that we need more gas, we’ve been busy countering their spin with facts, especially in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
However, not everyone is as enthusiastic as we are for the message to get out.
A billboard too far?
We wanted to let the people of the Northern Territory know the facts about gas, so we designed this billboard and tried to put it up at Darwin airport.
The Airport refused our business saying it was “negative” and “directed at one of its clients”.
No worries, we’ll leave Santos out of this.
We came back with this design.
Nope! This one was also rejected. The reason given: “NT Airports will not support any political advertising of this nature”.
The airport is a private company that gets to choose what facts they will advertise and what stories they will tell — we get that.
But it won’t stop us from letting people in the NT, and Australia, know the truth about the gas industry, and we’d appreciate your support.

Richard on ABC Radio Darwin
To discuss the gas elephant in the Northern Territory, Richard Denniss joined ABC Radio Darwin on Tuesday, 20th August.
Have a listen:
“We just wanted to spend our money to take out an ad — in the way that the gas industry spends a lot of their money taking out a lot of ads — but unfortunately we weren’t given the opportunity to speak to Northern Territorians.”
The facts about gas
- NT drivers pay 30 times more in vehicle registration than the gas companies pay via the petroleum resource rent tax (PRRT).
- Multinational gas corporations operating in Australia pay very little in either tax or royalties and employ a very tiny amount of people.
- Over the last four years, they made $149 billion selling Australian gas that they got for free, with a grand total of zero royalties collected.
- Australia-wide, more than half (56%) of Australia’s gas is given to multinational gas corporations for free, with no royalties collected.
A great deal for gas companies – a terrible deal for Australians.
